The legendary Joe Kasberger set standards that few coaches have ever equalled. As athletic director and coach of football and baseball at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, New Jersey, his record earned national prominence. But the coach had a previous history of great accomplishment in his native Oregon as athlete, coach and athletic director, before a unique series of events drew him east to New Jersey and his teams' remarkable years of fame. As important as his national coaching records were the lessons he taught in decency and hard work that all who knew him acknowledge.

The author, Dennis Joyce, was educated at St. Benedict's Prep. Joe Kasberger was his Freshman English teacher as well as his baseball coach. The experience was so fascinating that this research resulted. Joyce is a graduate of the University of Alabama and holds graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee and the University of Baltimore.
