Sesquicentennial, 1857-2007

Beginning in March, the Benedictines of Newark Abbey, along with our brothers of Saint Mary's Abbey, Morristown, will celebrate the establishment of the Bendictine community in Newark. Both communities trace their origin to Abbot Boniface Wimmer's acceptance of Saint Mary's Parish as the site of a priory. For several years, Wimmer had sent monks to help Father Nicholas Balleis, an Austrian Benedictine who had founded the parish in 1842. Wimmer was reluctant to accept the care of the parish, because he was, as he said in one letter, "afraid of cities." On the other hand, he was somewhat enamored of Newark. He finally agreed to the urgent plea of the Bishop and accepted the care of the parish in 1857, establishing a priory. The priory was raised to the dignity of an abbey in 1884. In 1956, the title "Saint Mary's Abbey" was transferred to the Morristown house, which had been founded in the 1920s, and the Newark house again became a priory. In 1968, the community in Newark was again granted independence, and took the name Newark Abbey, signalling its commitment to the city.
