Sesquicentennial 2007
2007 will mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of St. Mary's Priory in Newark, the coming of the Benedictine Sisters to Newark, and the dedication of St. Mary's Church. The celebration will probably run from May of 2007 until the end of 2008. While we have not finalized plans yet, we hope to have a variety of events to mark the occasion.
Opening Mass
Archbishop John Myers has agreed to preside and preach at a Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral opening the celebration of the sesquicentennial. This will be on March 24, 2007. It will be followed by a luncheon at the abbey. This Mass will honor all of the Benedictine communities in New Jersey, of which the monastery at Newark was the first.
