Turrell House

A Residence for College Students
Considering a Monastic Vocation

The Benedictine Monks of Newark Abbey have been living and praying in the center of New Jersey's largest city for over one hundred and fifty years. St Benedict's Preparatory School is the monks' major apostolate. The abbey church also hosts Saint Mary's Parish.

Turrell House at Newark Abbey is a residence for college-age men considering a monastic vocation. There are nine rooms on two floors. Each floor has a shared bathroom.

College-age men who are contemplating a monastic vocation are invited to apply to live in Turrell House. Residency can be year-round, college-term, or, for those who attend college away, during summer and vacation time.

One of the monks lives in the house as mentor/advisor. Residents eat in the monastic refectory, and are invited to participate in prayer with the monks. The residents of Turrell House seek to help each other grow spiritually, and seek frequent opportunities to grow as a community.

It is also possible to participate in some of the activities of the house, such as reading groups and trips, or other opportunities we find to spend time together, without living in the house.
