Brother Robert (Moisés) Islas, was received into the novitiate for Newark Abbey by the Abbot and Monastic Community on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, in a simple Rite of Reception into Novitiate in the Abbey Chapter Room following Vespers. Brother Robert is originally from Jalisco, Mexico. He is 19 years old and has shown much enthusiasm about our Benedictine way of life, particularly in his devotion to prayer – both communal and private and his work in the monastery garden.
Br. Robert received his monastic name from Abbot Melvin upon his entrance into the novitiate. The name conferred upon him is in honor of Saint Robert Molesmes. Saint Robert was the Abbot of Molesmes (France) and later went on to found the Abbey at Citeaux, a Cistercian Monastery in France (which follows a strict observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict). Saint Robert returned to Molesmes as the Abbot when the monks there saw the great reform and return to monastic rigor which Robert brout about as part of founding of the Abbey at Citeaux.
God Willing Brother Robert will take simple vows next October 17, 2020 – The Feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch.
Please pray for him to persevere and for a continued increase in vocations to the monastic life here at Newark Abbey!
